Planning End-of-Year Event
- Joining forces with Liaison Steering Committee, program TBD
- Date TBD, but end-of-May or first week of June. (May 7th or June 5th?)
- We won’t have money for food, but we will work in a break (lunch break)?
- Previous end-of-year events have been done on Assessment, Designing learning outcomes, Active Learning, etc.
Ideas for what we could do this year:
- Active learning opportunities that could be embedded in Libguides
- Fix-at-thon: Leah mentioned that at a recent RUSA meeting, LibGuide accessibility was again on the table. At Harvard, they did a “fix-a-thon” with a scoreboard to show everything that got fixed in the 90 minutes. Fix-a-thon was also done over zoom. Maybe B05 for the on-site location.
- Jason volunteered to do something on LibGuides as teaching tools.Location? Not needed. This would be more discussion-based.
- Best Practices: What do we want for an end-product?
- Can we simply point to some of the Best Practices guides we found?
- One issue is the institution-specific guidance on some of these guides
- Jason: Several different applications of libguides, e.g. teaching or resource list.
- Maybe we can create a guide that includes suggestions for guides created for different applications.
In a recent accessibility review, a number of guides were digned, but using one as a example, it was unclear why. Melissa Wallace looked at. She didn’t see a problem. Springshare didn’t see a problem. Did CIT use a different checker or a different standard? Very confusing. What guidelines, or tools, are CIT using?
Libguide Discovery
- Jason asked about LibGuide use. Are guides being used? Also asked about embedding in Canvas.
- Leah mentioned that there might be some pushback from faculty, concerned about maintaining control of what’s in Canvas (re: academic freedom). Jason and Leah will investigate further
- No campus-wide support to do this. It’s an individual initiative.
- FWS courses cannot be added to Canvas because of the numbering issue.
- Leah mentioned that when Course Reserves where added to Canvas, reserves use skyrocketed increased.
More on LibGuide Management/Maintenance
- Over 25,000 unused assets
- Should we try to manage this better?
- Alternatively, centrally-managing guide creation could cause problems for instructors
Guide-of-Guides
Julia will share a draft guide (with much to be flushed out) on our Confluence site.
