Notes from the April Instruction Committee meeting

Attending: Camille Andrews, Ken Bolton, Tony Cosgrave, Nan Hyland (guest), Jaron Porciello, Adam Smith (guest), Lynn Thitchener and Wendy Wilcox

Brainstorming on instruction information on CUL Website with Nan and Adam

Nan and Adam made a brief presentation regarding design and maintenance of the CUL Website. Committee members were then asked to provide feedback and suggestions for future modifications. We did not limit our suggestions to just instruction related information. Some suggestions included: a section on Services for Students, a link to Ask a Librarian under Research Help and ???. After a list was compiled members had the opportunity to vote with stickers on the items they felt were most important.

Status report on Digital Literacy Contest

It was decided that due to the cost involved and the inability of the GNIC Digital Literacy Contest system to provide adequate data for assessment of learning we decided to table this topic for the time being.

Update on needs assessment survey

We briefly discussed the timing of sending out the instruction librarian needs assessment survey. We decided to wait until after we hold the upcoming Instruction Open Forum in May.

Final selection of learning outcomes

The Learning Outcomes subgroup posted two alternative learning outcomes in five different categories. Using clickers to elicit anonymous responses, members voted for one of the two. Using this process we selected the five final learning outcomes which will be presented for comment at the May Instruction Open Forum.

Committee membership and leadership for next year

We reviewed the status of all of the current committee members, identifying who is continuing and who is not. We identified three vacancies and Tony will communicate with Tiffany. Tony also asked members who might be interested in chairing this committee next year to let him know.

Other business

The committee agreed to host a Library Open Forum in May to bring interested staff together to hear from Janet, Zsuzsa and members of the Instruction Committee about efforts related to the reaccreditation process. To had used Oracle before the meeting to identify a date. Gaby agreed to contact Janet and Zsuzsa to confirm their availability.
