Notes from 6/16/2010 Instruction Committee meeting:

Feedback for the WebFeat Transition Implementation team:

Jesse demonstrated the various changes that will take place when we transition away from using WebFeat for Articles, Database Names and Images in late July. There were some technical difficulties with the development web server so Jesse was not able to show us everything but he managed to demonstrate the core parts of the systems. Committee members provided feedback. We suggested that the transition team consider creating Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences options for searching groups of the EBSCO databases. Overall, people were impressed with the speed of the search results and we liked the presentation of the results too.  Access is available through the development server at http://wwwdev.library.cornell.edu.

Update on the upcoming Borrow Direct system:

Jesse also briefly demonstrated the new Borrow Direct interface. Feedback here included a suggestion that log in to Borrow Direct should occur when a request is being made and not when a person first enters the Borrow Direct system. This would allow public services staff to enter Borrow Direct and demonstrate it to patrons without having to log in when they first enter. This would also be similar to Voyager and would create a more common user experience for staff and patrons.

Update on needs assessment survey:

The Committee did a needs assessment of instruction librarians back in 2008 and used the information from it to help us make decisions on issues to address and programs to offer. The Committee decided it was time to do this again and we have created a new needs assessment. At this meeting, we decided to wait until CIT transitions to the new survey software, Qualtrics, over the summer and then send the survey out.

Posting of instruction mission statement and learning outcomes:

Committee members reviewed and approved the posting of the instruction mission statement and learning outcomes on the CUL Workshops and Instruction web page: http://campusgw.library.cornell.edu/svcs/serve/classinst. A few other small changes were also accepted. There were some other more major changes discussed that will be reconsidered at a future meeting.

Other business:

At the committee's last meeting, Tony issued a call for a new chair of the Instruction Committee. Jaron volunteered for this position and the committee members accepted her for this position. Jaron will serve as the Instruction Committee's chair beginning July 1, 2010.
