General Comment: I think we need to discuss and decide if we are writing outcomes for a single class session or for a student who has completed a degree at Cornell. I was originally thinking the former. But perhaps we should consider the later. In either case, it might be useful to have a brief statement regarding this.
Here's a new one:
Students will feel more confident doing research and know the types of resources and services available from the Library. (Tony)
ACRL 1: The information literate student determines the nature and extent of the information needed.
- Define their research needs in order to decide select the type, depth, and the amount of information they will need to complete their task.
- Investigate and select from a variety of information resources in order to choose the ones that best meet their needs.
- Students will develop an understanding of how scholarly information is formally and informally produced, organized and disseminated in their field of interest in order to select appropriate research tools and resources. [in 1, 3, 4]
- Students will use be able to utilize a variety of strategies to access relevant resources in order to conduct research effectively and efficiently. [in 1,3] This one belongs in ACRL 2 -- (access information effectively and efficiently)
With the exception of the last bullet point, the statements above all say the same thing in different ways, all focused on the ability to identify and select appropriate materials.
Students will develop an understanding of how scholarly information is formally and informally produced in order to investigate and select from a variety of information sources relevant to their field of inquiry. (Lynn)
Students will determine the nature and extent of information needed for their research. (Tony)
Define their information needs and apply their understanding of how scholarly information is produced in order to select from a variety of appropriate research resources, strategies, and types of materials (Camille)
ACRL 2: The IL student accesses needed information effectively and efficiently
- Find and access the needed information using the library systems and other tools in order to retrieve the pertinent information they need for their task to inform his or her research.
- Students will demonstrate an awareness use of the role of library resources and services in order to build confidence and conduct research that is sufficiently comprehensive and in-depth.
- Using library systems and other tools, students will define and locate relevant scholarly and scientific information in order to produce research that is sufficiently comprehensive and in-depth.
- Students will use be able to utilize a variety of strategies to access relevant resources in order to conduct research effectively and efficiently. (Lynn moved this from ACRL 1)
Condensed: Students will be able to find and use relevant information sources available from the library's catalogs, databases, and full-text resources, as well as from sources freely available on the Web, in order to access needed information effectively and efficiently. (Lynn)
Students will apply a research strategy to navigate the Library's collections effectively and efficiently and use sources available beyond the Library as appropriate. (Tony)
Find and use relevant information available from the library, the internet, and other sources in order to access needed information effectively and efficiently
Evaluate information critically according to selected criteria (such as authority, currency, bias, etc) in order to select appropriate sources to inform their research
Analyze and synthesize the information they find in order to accomplish a specific purpose
Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical, legal and social issues surrounding information in order to access, use, cite, and produce information appropriately and according to the Cornell's Code of Academic Integrity
ACRL 3 : The IL student evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system.
- Students will apply critical thinking skills in order to evaluate the information they find (popular, scholarly, current or historical, primary or secondary, etc.) to decide if it meets their criteria.
- Students will be able to utilize a variety of strategies to access relevant resources in order to conduct research effectively and efficiently. [1,3] I think this belongs under ACRL 2.
- Students will develop an understanding of how scholarly information is formally and informally produced, organized and disseminated in their field of interest in order to select appropriate research tools and resources. [in 1, 3, 4]
- Students will evaluate and incorporate appropriate information from the library system and other tools in order to establish and inform his or her research.
Condensed: Students will be able to evaluate selected information sources based on objective criteria of authority in order to select appropriate sources for their research.
Students will critically analyze and evaluate information to select appropriate sources for their research. (Tony)
Evaluate information critically according to selected criteria (such as authority, currency, bias, etc) in order to select appropriate sources to inform their research
ACRL 4 :The IL student, individually or as a member of a group, uses information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
- Students will analyze and synthesize the information they find in order to accomplish a specific purpose (a paper, presentation, movie, etc.). Let's stick with this one.
Students will synthesize the information to accomplish a specific purpose (a paper, presentation, movie, etc.). (Tony)
Analyze and synthesize the information they find in order to accomplish a specific purpose
ACRL 5 : The IL student understands many of the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and accesses and uses information ethically and legally.
- Students will understand the legal and ethical dimensions of information use in order to abide by Cornell's Code of Academic Integrity and [understand] the broader social context.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of information in order to use, cite, and acknowledge information sources appropriately. I like this one.
Students will understand the ethical and legal issues of information use in order to use, cite, and acknowledge information sources. (Tony)
Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical, legal and social issues surrounding information in order to access, use, cite, and produce information appropriately and according to the Cornell's Code of Academic Integrity
