Some themes that came out in our discussion: challenges associated with obtaining consent and participation given CUL's diversity of units and departments

• keeping goals manageable
• continuous reflection of what we do as part of an academic institution
• evaluate what we have already accomplished to move forward
• distinguishing between learning outcomes at program level and those used in a class
• IRB - is this necessary?}}{}

  Purpose

What is the prupose of an instruction assessment plan?

• to be able to demonstrate success or progress
• to demonstrate and evaluate the learning that occurs as a result of library instruction
• to know/learn what students are actually learning when they are in our classes; how to best reach them
• where are the best places to target our energies
• evaluate how our proram as a whole by the time students graduate; reach learning outcomes -- what are they
•  raising awareness to our stakeholders (library adminisration & faculty) on what library instruction can accomplish
• strengthening our own teaching -- what other options are there out there? 
• assist instructors to become more effective teachers
• assist instructors to practice assessment, via webinars and workshops ?
• assist instructors to become familiar and comfortable in using assessment techniques
• develop a knowledge base, a wiki or something similar as a repository for tools, such as rubrics and other assessment toolkits (similar to what the BIG group is doing and which Jaron discussed at our monthly meeting)

What does an excellent program for information literacy look like/do?

We used the stickies exercise as an initial brainstorm to articulate what we think an excellent program for information literacy accomplishes.

A number of ideas were expressed.  We will continue this exercise in our next meeting.
