Background: Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Carrau (antigenic formula 6,14,[24]:y:1,7) is a serovar of the O:6,14 (H) serogroup. This serovar was first isolated from the glands of pigs, in 1936 in Uruguay. Serovar Carrau was considered a rare serotype and was found to cause septicemia in turtles.

Genetic characteristics: Serovar Carrau has been found to be paraphyletic. A non-Carrau serovar, S. Madelia clusters within serovar Carrau. Karczmarczyk et al. reported uncommon high-level quinolone resistance with absence of any DNA gyrase mutations in serovar Carrau.

Animal reservoir: Serovar Carrau was found in horses, dogs, and wild animals such as snake, lizards, and turtles

Geographical distribution: Serovar Carrau has been reported in North America, South America, and Europe such as Finland, and the UK.
