September 9, 2015 Room: Catherwood 231

  2. Sub-team updates - 20m
    1. Website – Team is meeting today.  Working on a form for requesting instruction. Team wants to include examples. It was suggested that new Engineering videos might be an option to include.  Suggestion for short vignettes for potential “customers” to look at.  The team will consider this at their meeting.  The group discussed how to bring traffic to the CUL instruction sites.  Need a promotional effort.  Team will talk with Lib Comm for assistance.  Do we have data on the usage of this page?  Team will try to find data.  The group discussed who gets the form after it is submitted.  Right now requesters have to select a library. 
    2. Technology/Learning Spaces – Next meeting will be webinar on Evanced system migration.  Current system is horrible.  Withdrawing current product in 2017, so must transition by then. Evanced is purchased with PSEC funds authorized by Kornelia.  Upgrade is free, but we do pay an annual fee.
    3. LibGuides - Best practices document & training announcements – Marsha and Kelly are doing a workshop on finding images and using them in LibGuides.  Recent problem with LibGuides – custom annotations were replaced by generic ones without warning.  Kelly is trying to resolve this problem.
    4. Assessment – the Assessment team met once and has set a meeting schedule for the semester.  They are identifying the components for a pilot assessment exercise this fall.  Likely will use a version of the “1-minute paper.” Currently, they have prepared 5 questions. Looking for librarians to participate in the pilot.  Initially, they are looking for librarians teaching undergraduate classes that are tied to an assignment.  Would like 2 from each cluster. Targeting Oct-Nov timeframe.  Team will be meeting with and running the plan by Kornelia.  The group discussed several approaches for the pilot, needs to help clarify the PULSE data.   The group hopes to finalize its plan by early Oct.  Jill noted that EMPS does not have any instruction for undergrads so will likely not participate.  All others will go back to cluster to identify pilot classes/instructors.  Exercise will be done in Qualtrics.  Assessment sub-team will email PSEC instruction full team with an invitation to participate in the pilot.
    5. Programming – Programming will support the other high priority activities of the team this year, e.g. the Dec. event could focus on assessment work for spring.  Other activities will likely include: 1) Follow up with CTE for the Class Design Institute participants; 2) Mentoring program – reinvigorate LIPP?; 3) Certificate program with CTE; 4) Instruction coordinators discussion (Tony will coordinate); 5) Article discussions – 1 per semester; 6) possible lightning talks with liaison committee.
    6. Information Literacy/Instruction Leadership – Chris requested funding for the team for this year.  Each PSEC group will receive $500.  Instruction team received an additional amount for a total of $1270.  May have opportunity to request additional if other groups do not use all of their funding.  The chairs group is meeting with CTE for our quarterly meeting.  Will discuss CDI followup and certificate program.  CTE would again like a librarian to participate in the CDI for faculty.

  2. Debrief of recent events
    1. Course Design Institute
      1. Lance: Met with David from CTE - CTE pleased with the event - CTE wants to talk about expanding into a librarian certificate program - Certificate award for participation in events and feedback/observation - feedback from participants was positive - discussing follow-up with CTE for the fall
        1. ACTION ITEM: PSEC Instruction Chairs will schedule meting with David Way to discuss next steps
        2. ACTION ITEM: Can information literacy become a training focus within the faculty certification program?
    2. Instruction Support Fair
      1. Chris: Jill, Garima, and Chris were on-hand to represent instruction services.  Aimed at new faculty.  Fairly low attendance. More lead time and marketing needed in the future.  Why was it limited to new faculty, especially when faculty survey showed a need for awareness? - Is "Fair" inviting to faculty?  "Breakfast"? 
        1. ACTION ITEM: Meghan will share title feedback with Bonna.
  3. Role/expectations of instruction coordinators
    1. Marsha (absent): Difference in expectations between member-at-large on committee, instruction coordinators in areas
      1. Member-at-large - role is participate fully on PSEC Instruction, but the coordinators are representative and should be representing their areas within the committee
      2. Charge - representation from units, usually the Instruction Coordinator 
      3. Marsha's question - are there different models of instruction coordination when there isn't a formal coordinator?
        1. ACTION ITEM: Website Committee needs to update the Instruction Coordinator list: https://www.library.cornell.edu/instruction-coordinators
        2. Possibility for future discussions that bring together the broader instruction community?
      4. PSEC Instruction absorbs some of the "visioning" and training roles of local coordinators with programming intended for the whole Library
      5. Coordinators locally supporting the flow of communication and encouraging local units to participate in programming
  4. Priorities for the Year
    1. Shared Instructional Philosophy - bringing instructors together to hammer out a shared philosophy (see U of Arizona) - possibly via Programming committee
      1. Mary: Manager Council agenda - strategic planning - how does instruction and information literacy fit in the overall strategic planning effort? 
      2. Gaby: Jeremy/EMPSL doing pilot videos for the Engineering school - "how to do" videos - working with someone at Engineering - targeting large-format courses - covering some disciplinary content, some broad topics like Passkey - "How to do Research in a Cafe" - faculty are committed to it being in the courses - Kathy Dimiduk at Engineering is the CTE of the Engineering School - CUL branding on the videos rather than Engineering
    2. Mentoring - Peer Review - Peer Observations - still need to get this off the ground through the committee in some way if it's important to us
