StaRS Filter Sand Segregation

The purpose of the StaRS Filter Sand Segregation team is to characterize the best sand size ratio and distribution within a sand filter that will not result in segregation after backwash. The main goals for the team include quantifying under what conditions sand segregation occurs, devising a method to hydraulically size sand within a filter, and improving the efficiency of backwash in a sand filter by altering bed height, sand size ratio, the slope of the filter, and backwash velocity.
