Ideas!

Sara: Interview rooms - #?, open group study areas, individual & group rooms (I'd love to add what we're losing in terms of these rooms from the 4th floor to the 3rd floor), reservable spaces - what should be on it and how many?, testing space for new technology/furniture, flex classroom, TA space, faculty/grad space?, A/V Production Room - change expectations; possibly shift to another floor, more whiteboards, variety of seating & tables, supply vending machines, food vending machines, more presentation practice space, counter height seating, quick print/email areas

I like the proposed outline of spaces (use types) that is described for each floor above by Sara.  I didn't see the VHS-to-DVD conversion decks mentioned and would add a few VHS-to-DVD conversion decks to the multimedia/AV room proposed for the second floor. possivbly review some other formats?  - don't go to the extent of Danielle Mericle's "white elephant room" in Olin though!

I would like to see a suite of reservable desktop videoconferencing rooms (both individual and small groups) to allow folks to easily connect and collaborate remotely for any purpose (eg. faculty acting as a guest speaker to a remote location, student interviews, participation in a meeting or webinar, etc).  we could easily equip some of the existing individual and group study rooms on the 2nd or 3rd floor for this purpose.

CALS facilities is currently (to my knowledge) not designing spaces or providing furniture for "scale-up" or "flipped classroom" models of teaching.  There is a lot of buzz about this methodology - coming from faculty - and providing a space for this style of teaching could be an opportunity for Mann to be an early-adopter / leader in space/furniture design for CALS (and Cornell?).  Furniture here is the key - something that could be set up in pods of different sizes, and could also be broken out into rows?  like this: http://bretford.com/resources/downloads/specifications/e2_4leg_scale_up_table.pdf

We still have to get over the IT networking hurdles (federated access, security) related to wireless display control by BYOD's (bring your own device),  BUT ideally we want to have all collaborative work stations accessible from any wireless BYOD's brought in by patrons.

Important points to consider:

• Assessment and ongoing assessment-how will we accomplish that? Traditional ways such as surveys, focus groups, interviews, student advisory groups.  Also experimental spaces; put something out there and observe use. Ways to allow hands-on student involvement in ongoing design of library through curriculum? Allow greater involvement from student workers? Get continuous feedback in lightweight way?
• Emerging partnerships with academic partners---CTE, CIT, Cornell Tradition, etc.
• Where do we see the future going? Think holistically about impacts-- mobile technology, cloud, desktop computing impacts
• What is the role of technology? Somewhat related to the above bullet point but we can also look at technology in terms of how the library uses it to market itself and assist students - do we want touch screens for resource finding, group or study session meet-up info, computer availability, etc.  The #1 piece of equipment that students have wanted at all locations, including Mann, is a whiteboard. 
• How do today's students work collaboratively?  Refer to MALT studies, research, other institutions, etc.
• Multimedia's role; multimedia studios?  Can we get a good sense of the multi-media projects that faculty are requiring? 
• Role of scale up classrooms; large mobile spaces for use of graduate students
• Display space for projects - important for providing ownership of space
• Providing student social space where students can "happen upon another conversation" and join in
• Fluid/dynamic environment--things will change; any plan needs to be flexible and forgiving; ok to fail
• Vision Possibilities: Idea of library as learning lab and integral partner in whole lifecycle of scholarship (place to generate ideas, study, teach, research, collaborate, create & communicate your work). Role of library in making visible scholarly conversation.
• New funding and planning model - how to design process for long term and continual renewal, not "set it and forget it"
