Christopher Ober, the Francis Bard Professor of Materials Engineering, was appointed as interim dean of engineering at Cornell University in 2009. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1986 after several years at the Xerox Research Centre of Canada. His research is focused on lithography, patterning, the biology-materials interface, and control of surface structure in thin films. Ober received the 2003 International Sematech Outstanding Contribution Award, the 2004 Photopolymer Science and Technology Award, the 2006 American Chemical Society Award in Applied Polymer Science, a 2007 Humboldt Research Prize, and the 2009 Johannes Gutenberg Research Award, given by the University of Mainz. He was also named to the inaugural class of American Chemical Society fellows in 2009.
