FUTURE TASKS
The Fall '09 ANC Control team tried using a different theory (that of lime 'particles' and tube settler spacing equations) to obtain a consistency between the theoretical and experimental results, this theory was only true for a brand of lime having a certain composition and particle size distribution for which the lime feeder ran for a maximum uninterrupted duration of 4hrs 20min. By using a different brand these and maybe other parameters changed, that need to be re-tested.
Many parameters control the pH performance of the lime feeder (such as upflow velocities of water, quality of water, quality of lime (its composition and particle size distribution), quantity of lime, constructional design of the lime feeder (What other designs are you proposing then?), duration for which a stable pH of 12 is obtained, etc.). (Be more specific about parameters you are investigating.) During the Fall '09 experiments, a new design of a lime feeder was tried out and performance was tested against water quality and lime quality. Hence, the future goals for the coming teams include:
* Finding out what, if not the hypothesized carbonates, is causing the poor performance of the lime feeder in comparison to its theoretical run length and how can it be overcome. (How will you determine this? Design a method and experiment.)
* Verifying if the quality of water (Quantify quality. What parameter are you using to make the determination of quality?) has a strong influence on the pH behavior or not i.e. whether it is worth using the costlier distilled water for experiments in place of tap water or not. (To make these evaluations, it is necessary to run more trials on the experiment using the new lime but with tap water; and using the old brand of lime with distilled water.) (This is still very vague on what experiment you will be conducting and how you will be conducting it.)
* Evaluating if the design calculations made so far are acceptable for different types of lime (different brands will have slightly different compositions) with slightly varying solubility characteristics in water.
* Improving the constructional design of the lime feeder (since the present one is difficult to handle) or experimenting a newer model for the lime feeder.
(What about Chengfeng's idea of using a system to cycle out the carbonates? Can your group come up with a preliminary way to scale it in the lab? What parameters are important here? I recommend another page before the final that contains your design for this system.)
