Apply for the CUL Information Literacy Fellowship!

Dear CUL staff,

Do you have an interest in building and enhancing CUL’s information literacy program?  If so, you are invited to apply for the 2017-2018 CUL Information Literacy Fellowship.  Created by the PSEC Instruction Team and supported by the Library Directors Leadership Team, the fellowship is modelled generally on the successful DSPS Fellowship.  A selected CUL staff member will use release time of 10-25% FTE to devote to a specific project of his/her design related to CUL-wide information literacy.  The overall goals of the fellowship are to give the selected fellow time to enhance his/her knowledge and skill set in the area of information literacy and to apply that knowledge to a major cross-unit information literacy programmatic issue. 

Fellowship details:  

The selected Fellow will serve a term of 6-12 months at the proposed part-time capacity. He/she will spend release time in a workspace away from their regular duties in order to concentrate on a deep exploration of their selected topic in the area of information literacy.  Although there are no prerequisite skills required, the candidate should have a general familiarity with the recent trends and practices in information literacy.  The fellow will receive a $2000 travel stipend to support travel related to information literacy – this could be a conference or a visit to an information literacy exemplar institution working in the area of your project.  Mary Ochs, liaison from Library Directors Leadership Team, will serve as the supervisor/mentor for the Fellow.

What does a proposal look like? Proposals should include a brief cover letter outlining your plan for the fellowship including the amount of time you propose devoting, anywhere from 0.10 FTE up to 0.25 FTE, for up to 1 year.  The letter should also generally describe your program area/topic of interest, a brief description of how you will carry out your project, an estimation of your project timeline, and your proposed output and impact on CUL’s information literacy program.

Proposals should address the following points/questions:

  1. Selected topic or area of focus.  Include detailed description of plan to be accomplished.
    1. Who are your stakeholders?
    2. What does success look like?
    3. Who will you work with (names and departments), if anyone?
    4. What gap(s) are you filling?
    5. What is your timeline?
    6. Can PSEC instruction help you in any way?
  2. How many hours a week and for how many weeks would you devote to the fellowship?
  3. Please describe how your project will benefit CUL-wide information literacy efforts.
  4. How does your proposed project build on or further recent trends and practices in information literacy?
  5. Describe your deliverables. When will your deliverables be complete?
  6. How will you use the $2000 travel stipend?
  7. Do you need any additional funds to accomplish your goals, e.g. supplies?
  8. How will you share the results of your fellowship with CUL and the wider profession?

Applications will be reviewed by a small committee selected from PSEC Instruction Team members.  The Fellowship will be awarded based on the potential of the project to advance CUL’s information literacy program. The application deadline is March 1, 2017.  Notification of the award will be April 1, 2017, and the fellowship will begin on June 1, 2017 and end on May 31, 2018.

Some Potential Fellowship topics:

  • Implement one or more of the Threshold Concepts from the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy into a unit program and act as a resource for CUL in translating the experience to other disciplines
  • Complete an environmental scan of decentralized instruction environments similar to CUL - Scan of best practices in information literacy programs in institutions with a decentralized organizational structure
  • Develop a professional development/training strategy for CUL instructors in pedagogy and teaching information literacy best practices
  • Any other topic to be proposed by applicant
