John Balen is a partner at Canaan Partners, an early-stage technology
and health care venture capital firm. With more than 30 years in venture
capital and technology startups, he has served as the lead investor and
board member for numerous technology startups including: Commerce
One, Echopass, eStamp, Everdream, ID Analytics, Intraware, Rightpoint,
SilverRail Technologies and SOASTA. He currently serves on the boards
of Blurb, Cardlytics, Switchfly and UrbanSitter. Prior to joining Canaan
Partners in 1995, Balen was a managing director at Horsley Bridge
Partners, a multi-billion private equity firm where he was responsible for
investing in venture capital partnerships and aspiring technology companies.
Prior to his investment career, he was an engineer with Digital
Equipment Corporation and Codenoll Technology. He currently serves
as an advisory council member for the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate
School of Management, Cornell Engineering – Electrical and Computer
Engineering, Entrepreneurship at Cornell and Cornell Silicon Valley.
