Software Chemistry IT does not directly manage

  • Version X7, (10/2015). All offerings seem to be multiplatform (Windows / Mac) and perpetual (of same version; not free version upgrades).
    
    • BOTTOM LINE: Most convenient via Campus Store, and good price for physical media. Download version is $11-30 cheaper, available from EndNote's academic reseller, "OnTheHub eStore".

    • ChemIT attempted to bulk-license for a group summer 2015 and it was not cheaper than buying boxes at the Campus Store. Cheapest way used to be via Campus Store (physical, only).
      • March 2017: Overheard Aye group bought licenses for group members for about $800 total. Q: Cost-effective? Easier?

  • Cost factors include: Bulk licensing, academic and student licensing (who is paying for it matters), and if buying new or upgrading a version.

  • Researchers (all in A&S) can use MatLab (and other software) for free on free instances at CISER. So, may not want it bought for their personal computers!
    • A&S's CISER account for researchers
  • ChemIT runs the license server for MatLab licenses bought by the group. Not for use by those with personal licenses, such as described below.

  • The group's PI or course instructor (for TAs) may instead want to buy the software for the grad student, but it will cost the PI/ course ~$200. PI may also buy that ~$200 license for a PostDoc (or keep in group?), especially since the PostDoc can’t get the lower student price.

  • Students can purchase a 1 year student license for MatLab from the campus store for $49 (as of 11/2015):

      •   License Term:  August 1, 2015 to July 31, 2016 
      • Student licenses can only be purchased by current Cornell students with personal funds for personal and academic use. This license cannot be purchased by staff, faculty or departments and cannot be purchased using institutional funds.
