7/6/15, Oliver's notes of ChemIT meeting

ChemIT is to set up, secure, network, and support a computer for Petr with the following capabilities:

Capable of running basic office software as well as Petr's scientific and programming environments.
Petr can install software using a special Administrator account.
The computer can be accessed remotely (RDP) from Petr's private network or anywhere else from campus. With VPN, it will also be accessible from off-campus.

To ensure stability and protect other devices on the network, the computer will have the following characteristic:

Single-boot operation (not dual-boot), running Windows 7 (or 8, if desired).
This computer will not be running any virtual machines.
This computer will have only one Network Interface Card (NIC).
The computer will only have accounts provisioned by ChemIT.
The computer will not host file sharing or printer server services.

Any needs not met with the above characteristics will be discussed with ChemIT to ensure the computer remains secure, connected to the network, and supportable by ChemIT.

Per meeting 6/18/15, with Jack, Petr, Michael, and Oliver:

1) Michael Hint: Provide Petr an updated specifications, based on Petr's original specs.

2) Oliver: Write up this document and share with Petr and Jack.

3) Petr: Send ChemIT a list of software to install.

4) Jack: To confirm finance issues with Kevin.

Reminders, from the meeting:

Computer takes 3 weeks to get delivered, once the order is placed.
ChemIT will need about a week to set up the computer, depending on Petr's software and configuration needs.

Decisions related to Petr's new workstation

Purchase a single workstation for Petr's research, from which he can also check his email and write papers.

Requirements:

Run scientific software.
- Get and update some software from off-campus.
- Includes MATLAB, so ensure it's licensed (either fixed or via ChemIT's license server over the network).
Browse the web, including Petr's email.
Access ACERT's file share.
Access this computer via RDP from any networked computer.
Store unique, valuable data in a safe, backed-up manner.
- Q: File share or EZ-Backup?
Petr will not run an Active Directory.
- The lab computers will use only Cornell's Active Directory.
