Book Repair
Book repair in the Cornell Conservation Unit is responsible for the preservation and conservation of circulating materials in Cornell University Library collections. We provide the following care to materials that have been damaged through circulation:
- Evaluate damaged materials to offer to the Division of Rare and Manuscripts Collections in appropriate collecting areas
- Transfer books with brittle paper to the Brittle Books Program for reformatting or replacement
- Transfer books that cannot be treated in the lab due to split bindings, broken sewing or missing covers to the Commercial Binding Department
- Repair books with broken joints (link to full repair manual guide) and damaged spines (link to partial repair manual guide)
- Build marginal material cases (link to manual guide) for items that cannot be repaired or commercially bound
- Build contour cases (link to manual guide) to house items of different shapes and sizes together
Student employees, under the direction of the Book Repair Coordinator, are responsible for book repair treatment and protective enclosures during the academic year.
