Hi Everyone,
Camille and I met with the Communications Team this morning, and we all came up with a fun way to raise awareness about information literacy during the month of October. We are thinking of having a Halloween contest/treasure hunt entitled, “Trick or Truth” (hat tip to Carla for the crafty title). Students will be presented with a single question for which they must research the answer. The answer must be provided in proper citation format to receive credit. All who submit answers will be entered in a drawing to win a prize. Zsuzsa has suggested the possibility of using a $25 iTunes gift card as the prize – she already has one available.
How it will work:
Camille will create a Qualtrics page where students may access submission rules, view the contest question, and submit their answers. A link will also be provided to the library website pages that address how to properly identify and cite credible sources.
Advertising will include the following:
-LCD Screens (Using the catch phrase above, setting forth the contest question, and incorporating a line about Information Literacy Awareness Month)
-University calendar – show as an event for Halloween
-Shelf Life column
-Perhaps an ad in the Sun. If not in print, perhaps online. Zsuzsa will speak to Anne about possible funding options.
-Perhaps include as a “News” feature on the Library website.
-A clue could be provided on Facebook/Twitter.
What we need now:
If everyone is on board with this idea, our next step is to generate a single, simple, spooky, fun question for students to research and answer. One possibility is to draw on the local history regarding Rulloff. Camille suggested keeping the question open-ended, such as “Find convincing evidence that…” So that the students can visit any number of sources, but with the same result, i.e. the same answer to the question.
We have very little time, but the Communications Team has been wonderful about being willing to move this idea forward quickly.
Please let’s brainstorm ideas for the question this week, and submit any that you can think of by the end of the day Friday, October 14. Camille is creating a space on our wiki to submit our ideas.

Rules modified from McIntyre Library contest
1. Limit your post to no more than 300 words.
2. Librarians reserve right to judge credibility of citation (too harsh?)
3. Joint or team submissions and up to five separate entries allowed. At least one person must come to the library to claim their prize.
4. Winners must agree to have their photo and story used by the library for promotional purposes.
5. Winners' photos and their stories will be posted on the library plasma screens and library news blog.
