Announcements and updates

• The remaining committee meetings for the spring semester conflict with Reference & Outreach forums so the meeting times will be changed to 11:30-12:30.
• The committee is interested in hosting a TLT webinar series about information literacy and assessment. Olin would probably be the best location. Gaby will inquire about funding from RAU. We will look for an available location later in the spring.
• Mann Library Teaching Experience - Ken and Wendy have volunteered to take part in this program. Other committee members are also interested so Camille will find out if there is more room.
• Tony reported on the latest PSEC meeting. There has been a change to the Course Help area on the CUL home page. More detailed search examples have been added to the site.
• The committee will host a meeting with CUL instruction coordinators - Thursday, February 4, 12-1pm in Olin 106. 

Mission statement final review

The committee looked at our updated version of the CUL instruction mission statement. This will be on the agenda for the instruction coordinator's meeting and then will be presented to PSEC. 

Update on active learning techniques session

Camille is investigating funding for a presentation by a guest speaker recommended by David Way. If approved, this presentation will probably take place sometime in March or April. 

Instruction database discussion Jaron is working on a similar project for the Business Information Group. This topic has been tabled until a future meeting due to Jaron's absence. 

New listserv for reference and instruction staff

We discussed some of the advantages and disadvantages of setting up a reference and instruction-related mailing list. Among the disadvantages was the large number of e-lists currently in use within CUL. We also felt that, in the interest of inclusivity, we would not want to send announcements concerning instruction only to a reference and instruction e-list.  After a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of managing a mailing list, we decided that we are not in favor of setting up a separate mailing list for reference and instruction at this time. 

Responses to Zsuzsa's assessment report

Zsuzsa would like to know if the committee will have documentation for the accreditation report (mission statement, learning outcomes) ready by May. Yes, we will have documentation ready by May and we will also add links on the CUL web site. Can the committee create a toolbox of assessment techniques? Camille showed examples of tools she has created as well as the University of Minnesota information literacy toolkit (https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/AP/InformationLiteracyToolkit). We plan to have a work-in-progress ready by May. Does the committee have an interest in curriculum mapping? Yes, the committee would like to have a leadership role and host a forum. 

Gaby's immersion report

Gaby shared some of her experiences from the assessment immersion workshop. We looked at slides and a worksheet for developing assessment. The importance of assessment as a learning technique was discussed, as well as ways to implement assessment in the CUL instruction program. Some instruction assessment at CUL is performed at the class level but not the program (committee) level. An assessment sub-committee was formed (Lynn, Camille, Gaby, Tony) to develop an assessment program for CUL instruction. The sub-committee will come up with 3-5 learning outcomes by May.
