Minutes:

Present: Camille Andrews, Ken Bolton, Gaby Castro Gessner, Tony Cosgrave (chair/recorder), Janet McCue (guest), Jaron Porciello, Lynn Thitchener, Wendy Wilcox

Announcements and updates: 

Camille announced that there is interest in running another Digital Literacy Contest in the spring.  Wendy and Ken volunteered to help.

Gaby briefly reported on her experience at the Immersion Institute.  There was a lot of focus on writing outcomes both for individual classes and at the program level.  We plan to devote more time to this at future meetings.

Ken announced that he is now going to be known as Professor Bolton as he will be teaching a new 2-credit course starting next fall.

Tony displayed his LIPP Poster that he presented at the ACRL/NY conference and briefly reported on the conference.

Mission statement review

The Committee reviewed the latest version of the mission statement on the committee's wiki.  Several suggestions were incorporated and the current version will be shared with Unit Library Instruction Coordinators for comment.

LIPP brown bag report

Lynn reported on the brown bag she organized on behalf of the committee.  In spite of last minute attrition due to conflicts and illness, attendance was good. Twelve people participated. Participants included past, present and potential future LIPP partners.  Tony exhibited his poster from the ACRL/NY conference he presented at and he and Lynn also brought copies of LIPP forms and other related material.

Update on active learning techniques session (This item was done via email.)

The committee is considering sponsoring a guest speaker in conjunction with the Information Competency Initiative, the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Academic Technology Center in the spring.

Instruction database discussion

Update on Middle States review

Janet McCue joined the committee in progress and shared an update on the Middle States Reaccreditation Review. She reported on the activities of the review committee she serves on and the overall reaccreditation process.  She answered committee member's questions and agreed to send the committee a draft of her committee's report.

Committee priorities for 2010

Janet expressed her thoughts regarding priorities for the Instruction Committee in the coming year.  She encouraged us to continue our work on creating a mission statement for instruction.  She'd like to see us come up with general learning outcomes that can be adopted library wide and provide leadership within CUL regarding library instruction. She also would like to see the committee continue to integrate with the activities of the Information Competency Initiative and develop strong partnerships with faculty.
