• IMLS grant on library services and their impact on student success. 
  Lisa Hinchliffe, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; Megan Oakleaf, Syracuse University; and Kara Malenfant, Association of College and Research Libraries have received an IMLS grant to conduct a study of the impact of library services on student learning and student success. They will be looking for 75 institutions and will have a call for applications in January.

 This is a bit more information on the study :

Three hundred colleges and universities of all types will be selected to participate in the AiA learning community (Year 1: 75 institutions; Year 2: 100 institutions; Year 3: 125 institutions). Each participating institution will identify a team consisting of a librarian and at least two additional team members as determined by the campus (e.g., faculty member, student affairs representative, institutional researchers, or academic administrator). The librarians will participate in a one-year professional development program that includes team-based activities carried out on their campuses. The institutional teams will participate in peer review and provide feedback about projects being developed by other participating teams. The projects will be documented and disseminated for use by the wider academic library and higher education communities. For more details about AiA see the project homepage.

The institutional teams for AiA will be selected through a competitive application process designed to ensure representation from an array of postsecondary institutions. Information about how to apply to participate in the first cohort will be available in January 2013.

October 10, 2012

Thomas opened the meeting with a call for announcements and updates. 

Fall Speakers

Thomas and Kaila identified two potential speakers for the fall, including Megan Oakleaf of Syracuse University and Randy Hensley of CUNY.  Unfortunately, correspondence with Megan Oakleaf has revealed that her costs ($3,500 + travel) are beyond PSEC's budget, so she is no longer a viable option.  Thomas and Kaila will next touch base with Randy Hensley.

Thomas and Kaila encouraged members to pursue other ideas for speakers.  They are looking for someone who can provide a wide forum/discussion/presentation/answer questions/follow up on Immersion/keep-the-ball-rolling-kind-of-program with a focus on presentation styles, assessment, etc.  Perhaps someone from Cornell's Center for Teaching Excellence might be a possibility.  Also, Deb Gilchrist may be able to suggest someone else who could speak about assessment. 

Although PSEC approved funding for two speakers, it was agreed that for now we will focus on one speaker for the fall semester instead of two.  A second speaker will be reserved for the spring semester. 

Information Literacy Awareness Month

LCD Slides were created by Gwen Glazer for the purpose of advertising Information Literacy Awareness Month around campus.  Slides are currently up and running in several libraries, as well as the Cornell Store. 

Last year, Anne Kenney sent a "Take One" to CUL in honor of Information Literacy Awareness Month.  The group considered whether to ask Anne to do so again, and if so, what the angle would be.  Tony suggested approaching it from the state perspective as well as the federal.   He will look into whether New York State has declared a Proclamation regarding Information Literacy.  (Update:  Tony confirmed that October is Information Literacy month in New York.)

MOOC Courses

Cornell will be piloting two MOOC courses.  MOOC stands for Massive, Open Online Courses.  Anne has invited Jesse and Kaila to be on the implementation team.  They will work with IT at Cornell.  Neither faculty nor content have been identified yet, so is very much in the beginning stages.  The library is involved in instructional design, etc.  It is unknown whether the courses will be geared toward humanities, sciences, etc.  There may be an information literacy component for us to consider.

 PSEC update 

Amy reported that PSEC will be serving as the new face of CountIt!  Zsuzsa will soon be making an announcement to all of CUL about this. 

The Web Advisory Committee is being absorbed into the Discovery and Access Team.  Gaby raised concerns about the temporary nature of the Discovery and Access Team.  (Update:  Amy shared this concern with PSEC and it was decided that this absorption would still occur, because ultimately there will be an ongoing need for a team of Discovery and Access' nature, and so it will either become permanent or it will be replaced with something very similar.) 

Instruction Discussion                                  

It was decided that the first Instruction Discussion will occur on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 9:30-10:30am.  Marsha will lead the discussion.  It will be focused on problem-based learning.  Marsha will book a room in Fine Arts – Conference Room – third floor, Rand Hall.  Nina will send out the announcement and the reading.

Information Literacy Task Force Update

The task force is comprised of Chris Miller, Jaron Porciello, Thomas Mills, Kaila Bussert, Gaby Castro Gessner, Lance Heidig, Mary Ochs, and Camille Andrews.  Their charge is to work on strategic Goal 4 of the larger strategic plan, including designing an information literacy program and integrating it into the curriculum. 

Jaron reported on the Learning @ CUL document:   The Task Force is trying to wrap up their work this semester because the task force is coming to a close.  There will be a formal report.  It needs to be determined with Janet McCue what will happen after the task force ends - how the work will continue and how coordination will play out.  It is likely that it will encompass something like what we're doing now – discussions, brown bags, etc.  Other ideas also included better sharing of materials, forums where each unit can present what it is they do for instruction and what instruction means to them, better collaboration with faculty to get faculty on board and get librarians invited into classes.  All agreed that getting higher administration involved is crucial to achieving these goals. 

Regarding revising the Learning @ CUL document:  The Task Force is talking to every instruction coordinator at every unit library to see what unit programs look like and to get feedback.  This will assist in creating criteria for a pilot program.  The pilot is designed to represent a more formalized information literacy program.  It's very complex and will look different for every library.  Therefore, the Task Force is trying to determine a set of criteria to get a framework for the pilot, rather than actually define it at this time.

The Instruction Team at Olin provides a good example of ongoing efforts in this regard (Kaila, Lance & Suzette).  They have written a set of learning objectives for first year writing seminars based on what was learned at Immersion.   Their goal is to have something to show to the faculty they work with.  Ultimately they hope to have these learning outcomes embedded in the syllabi, and to eventually be tailored to the course.

MediaSpace

Kaila reported on MediaSpace:  Media Space is a new platform that brings together all of the library's media (library created videos only).  It includes audio files but is targeted to multi-media.  It also includes instruction content and collection content.   MediaSpace is meant for the public but will also be highly used as an internal tool.  Tags may be added and metadata associated with them.  It has not yet been determined where it will link from the library website.  The videos may be embedded in the website & LibGuides, etc.  Uploading of content will be locked to library staff. 

Discussion ensued surrounding the subcategories to be included in the Tutorials Tab.  Possibilities:  orientation, tutorials, starting research, find, evaluate, use, cite, and how-to's.   The group generally agreed that tutorials was the best term and was in keeping with the other tabs.  How-to's, citing, etc. may be subcategories.

Kaila will make a mock-up of a list of categories based on the group's suggestions and present it to the group for input.

• Welcome and introductions: 

Committee members introduced themselves and explained their instruction responsibilities and committee roles.  

• Goals for the year: 

We shared Immersion take a ways.  These included learning outcomes, working with colleagues from different units, positive feedback from Immersion faculty about instruction at CUL, anxiety is a shared emotion, learning to think about why we do certain activities in the classroom, developed deeper interest in instruction and learning. 

We need to maintain Immersion Momentum: 

Encourage Immersion small group activities: Jaron suggested that we host an hour-long lightning round session where teaching librarians share techniques.  It was suggested that we do that at an upcoming Reference and Outreach meeting.  Marsha, who serves on the R&O committee, agreed to check with R&O chairs about December's forum. 

Speaker series: a budget request has been submitted to PSEC for two speakers.  Names suggested were Randy Hensley and Megan Oakleaf.  This is on the agenda for the next PSEC.  Amy will notify the committee on the outcome of the request. 

Two instruction discussions related to a reading.  Jaron made a suggestion for a potential reading. 

Information Literacy Month – Amy agreed to working with Library Communication on some digital signage and Facebook to raise awareness that October Information Literacy Month.  Thomas will talk to them about an article in the Cornell Daily Sun that will also mention the Immersion Program. 

• Committee roles and responsibilities:  

Mary and Jaron are co-chairing the IL Task Force. Jaron, Mary, Thomas, and Kaila are leading the committees as a Steering Group. Amy is the committee's liaison with PSEC.  

• Instruction Discussions Coordinator: 

Nina volunteered to coordinate our instruction discussions.  With input from the committee, she will select the readings, reserve a location and advertise the events. 

• Wiki administrator: 

No one volunteered for this position.  We agreed that the minute taker will post the committee's minutes on the wiki. 

• CUL MediaSpace categories for instructional videos:  

Kaila provided a screen shot of the home page for this beta service.  It will be a location where the Library can aggregate any videos staff and units have created.  There are some decisions to be made regarding naming conventions.  Kaila will send out an email to the committee soliciting feedback on these.

We need to give our feedback on this document. We will be meeting with the Information Literacy Task Force at our October meeting to discuss plans for prioritizing goals and moving forward.
