As of Summer 2025, CNF no longer separately licenses or installs MATLAB is a numerical computing environment and programming language.
The CNF license for MATLAB includes the full suite of MATLAB and Simulink products for academic research use only.
Use of the CNF MATLAB license is limited to Cornell faculty and staff. You will need to enter a netid <at> cornell.edu email address and create/sign in to a Mathworks account via CUWebAuth when starting Matlab.
Run MATLAB on the CNF conversion computers with the following command:

– licensing is available to Cornell faculty, staff, and students via CU Software Licensing.
Cornell Student licensing for currently registered students at Cornell University, for installation onto student-owned equipment only, is available at no cost.
- Student licenses may NOT be installed onto any Cornell-owned computer.
Academic licensing for faculty and staff must be paid for by Cornell departmental funds:
- Installation onto Cornell-owned equipment only
- Home Use licensing available at no extra cost.
On CNF systems, users may instead use Octave, which is mostly compatiable with MATLAB.
