The proper use of telephones becomes especially important because it affects the ability of LTS staff as a whole to perform at an adequate level. In crowded work environments, consideration for others is extremely important.
The telephones in the departments throughout the library are to allow staff to conduct library business. Aside from unavoidable or emergency situations, the use of department telephones for other than library business should be kept at a minimum. Incoming personal calls from the offices of doctors and dentists during their business hours are unavoidable, as are occasional brief calls from/to family members.
Staff are expected to inform their family and friends that incoming calls should be limited.
Out of consideration for colleagues the noise level of telephone conversations should be kept to a minimum.
The policy for the use of cell phones for personal calls is the same as that for the use of office phones for personal calls.
Staff should not leave personal cell phones at workstations turned on and unattended.
S taff who need personal telephone authorization codes for business use will be issued one by Facilities & Business Operations, and will be initiated by the unit supervisor.
Staff should use personal phone cards when it is necessary to make personal long distance calls from department phones. See University Policy 3.19, Telephone Usage.

LTS staff need to read email throughout their workday to keep apprised of both CUL-wide and department-specific issues and announcements. Business often needs to be conducted via email as well. Personal messages should be sent only on the staff person's own time.

Please use your own phone to make and receive personal calls on your own time and away from others, whenever possible. The 110B Olin office, which does not require a reservation and has a door that can be closed for increased privacy, is a good place from which to make private calls.
For more information on Cornell’s policy on telephone usage, see Cornell University Policy 3.19.

The University has issued an array of policies and guidelines for the use of institutional hardware, software, and the network systems to which we have access as members of the Cornell community and as part of our jobs. For a list of these policies, including links, see University IT Policies.
LTS staff must keep abreast of unit and departmental issues and announcements by checking their Cornell email regularly and, when required, responding promptly. Reading and responding to personal email should be done on one’s own time.
For many LTS staff, the internet is an important tool for conducting business and meeting various job responsibilities. However, use of the World Wide Web for personal business should be done on one’s
