VPN Connection Required if Not on a Campus Network

• Cornell NetID users may connect either to the general Cornell VPN or to the RS-CNF-VPN-Thin group VPN if not on a campus network
• Cornell GuestID users must request access to and connect to the RS-CNF-VPN-Thin group VPN if not on a campus network

Lab Transfer Share

1. Use "Option 2" below
   1. Download and install an SFTP client
   2. Connect to Cornell VPN if not on a campus network
   3. Connect to remote.cnf.cornell.edu

Copying AFS Files To and From Your Computer

We recommend "Option 2" below.

Option 1- Install the AFS Client (AFS files only)

(NOTE: AFS is only directly available off campus via VPN – option 2 below is recommended for access to AFS files)

1. Connect to VPN if not on a campus network
2. Connect via SFTP to remote

Windows

1. Download WinSCP
2. Connect to either galaxy.cnf.cornell.edu or world.cnf.cornell.edu
3. Login with the SHORT version of your Cornell NetID/GuestID and associated password
4. Initially, you will be working directly out of your AFS home folder
5. You can move up directory levels to get to CNF shares or to someone else's home folder

Mac OS X

1. Download Fugu
2. Connect to either galaxy.cnf.cornell.edu or world.cnf.cornell.edu
3. Login with the SHORT version of your Cornell NetID/GuestID and associated password
4. When prompted with a warning about the host key of the computer, click "Yes" to continue connecting (you should only see this warning once, ever, per computer -- if you see it again, don't continue)If you receive an error box "Error looking up user groups", don't worry... just click "OK" and you can continue logging in
5. Initially, you will be working directly out of your AFS home folder
6. You can move up directory levels to get to CNF shares or to someone else's home folder – the lab transfer share is accessible at the top level folder

Large File Transfers

Please contact CNF Computing for help using a "jump host" on transferring large files ( a gigabyte or more) for conversion work directly to/from the scratch space on the CNF Conversion computers or tool computers. Do not store large files directly on the Lab Transfer Share. Trying to work with large files direclty out of AFS may not work well.
