Attendance: Thomas, Kaila (note taker), Tony, Amy, Nina, Carissa, Marsha, Mary, Gaby, Chris
Incoming chair:
- Nina Scholtz is our new chair for 2013-2014 academic year!
Teaching Forum:
- Mary will contact Shirley about set-up for Mann 160.
- Kaila will email IC Librarians about their attendance.
- Unit coordinators/reps: please encourage colleagues to attend and get a sense of participation.
CTE Faculty Course Design Institute – presentation and lunch with faculty on May 22nd
- Mary, Thomas, or Kaila will give a short presentation followed by lunch with faculty. Library instructors will be invited to attend the lunch based on the participating faculty.
- Survey: We can add 1 or 2 questions to the pre-institute survey. Kaila will send out the survey and get ideas for the questions. Deadline: end of May 3.
- We will want to follow-up with librarians who attend the lunch to see if they worked with faculty after the Institute.
Library credit courses web page – looking for volunteer/s to take this on - Nina agreed to spearhead this effort.
- Thomas has compiled all of the courses. He will confirm with Susette when this information is needed by Undergraduate Research office.
- If it's a tight deadline, we will create a public Confluence page as a stop-gap.
- Long-term we want to develop a web page that is dynamically generated with the courses.
- This also brings up the larger issue of redesigning our web page/s. This should be a priority for the next year - the new Instruction Team should form a task force.
Other
- Gaby announced that Erin Eldimier will be an intern for RAU. Part of her internship will be working on the curriculum mapping project. She will also sit in on the Teaching Forum.
- Fall information literacy training for CUL. Chris brought the idea to BLAST. There is interest so far in doing this for Business resources.
- Amy reported that the PSEC May 15 meeting will decide on new membership for committees. We are looking for 1 at large member. Thomas and Kaila will attend.
- Mary suggested that we review the Information Literacy Task Force report at the first meeting of the new PSEC Team in July. She will send this out to everyone.
- We will also need to vote on the chair-elect at the 2nd meeting of the new PSEC Team (probably August).
- Kaila gave an update on the Mann Life Sciences/Instruction Coordinator search: phone interviews are done; inviting final candidates for on-campus in May.
- We discussed the last Reading Discussion on humor. Possible future forum/workshop on learning techniques to help with teaching anxiety?
April 2013
Agenda
Attendance: Carrisa Vogel, Nina Schultz, Jim Del Rosso (guest), Hilary Wong (guest), Patrick Stevens, Mary Ochs, Chris Miller, Marsha Taichman, Kaila Bussert, Thomas Mills, TonyCosgrave (note taker)
April 3 in Olin 703, 11 am - 12 pm
1. R&O's Unconference: Jim Del Rosso and Hilary Wong joined us to discuss possible PSEC Instruction participation*. 5/21*
Structured and unstructured events. Call will go out soon for topics. The unstructured part will allow people to create and join their own groups. Would like a few seed events and asking Instruction Committee for ideas. Locations are Mann 102 and 160. Lunch provided by Manndible. This will be a unique opportunity for people to communicate with their peers. There will be a wide range of 5 minute lightning rounds. Some of the lightning rounds may be available via Webex. Webex may also allow for recording of the lightning rounds. Will conclude with a debrief to assess the effectiveness of this format. This extends beyond CUL (IC, TC3, TCPL, etc.). Speed collaboration sessions are being considered too.
2. CTE Workshops for Library Instructors. HOMEWORK: Before next week's meeting, please ask your unit's instructors about their top concerns with their own teaching. Are there topics that they would like to explore in a workshop?
Chris has been communicating with CTE in regards to ILR instruction and the thought was to expand this effort CUL wide. Ideas include the one-shot challenge to engage students and keep them focused while using technology. Another was effective short video production and other technologies for teaching. Defining outcomes and how to structure the learning process. Assessment of video segments. There's no specific timeframe for the workshop(s).
3. May Teaching Forum planning, etc. People from IC are interested in attending some of our events. Including this one and possibly future article discussions. Morning refreshment logistics are all set. Marsha and Tom will pick them up. Kaila's next reminder will include an RSVP request. 160 Mann has been reserved. Committee members will help with clean up after the event. We will call it the Spring Teaching Forum. We discussed what type of assessment we may want to do. We're going to consider Webex for the presentation segment.
4. Assessment of Law Research Sessions Attendance has been good. Sessions have been recorded and will be made available. We will put the Powerpoint presentations on the Instruction wiki. Final one was on Monday, 4/8. This hopefully will serve as a model for other units to offer similar trainings in their subject area. Chris will discuss the idea with HLM.
5. Other: April article discussion on humor in the classroom with Chris Miller. Office of Undergraduate Research is interested in us preparing a list of library instruction credit courses to be made available on the web for interested students to see. Step one is compiling a list of all the credit courses currently being offered. Mary is going to compile a list from information she has gathered in the past. Chris is going to send Mary information on a new course that was just approved. Mary will share her list for review with an eye toward identifying additions for the list.

February 2013
Attending: Nina, Patrick, Tony, Gaby, Thomas, Kaila and Marsha
February 6 in Olin 106G from 11-12
Agenda
1. Article discussions - dates for spring semester, etc.
- Chris agreed to facilitate an article discussion (maybe on humor in the classroom), Tony will do one as well (on the flip classroom)
- Want to encourage people to come, even if they haven't read the article
- Facilitators could do summaries
- Other topics: peer instruction, Jose Bowen's TEACHING NAKED: HOW MOVING TECHNOLOGY OUT OF YOUR CLASSROOM WILL IMPROVE STUDENT LEARNING, mental modes of librarians versus students discussing Libguides
- Last semester: these were on the last Tuesdays of the month to avoid R&O, will keep them in the same slot this semester
- Perhaps we should have a virtual space to file articles for PSEC Instruction? Kaila will look into permissions.
2. Discussion of PSEC-Instruction committee structure moving forward
- Task force is done, report submitted
- No home for the work that the task force undertook, and the logical place to take this up would be the Instruction committee (please see IL TASK FORCE REPORT from January 15, 2013 document for details of proposed restructuring and membership)
- We want to ensure continuity of the group
- Chair elect to be chosen in addition to current membership
- 14 members under new model
- Chair and chair elect could be enough to maintain continuity
- Current membership is 2 years (this would mean a longer membership with new chair structure)
- Instruction coordinators from each library will always need to be involved
- Report went to Janet and LEG, if this is accepted then an AUL (Janet?) will be making contact with Instruction coordinators rather than current chairs
- When we get the go ahead, we will reexamine our charges
3. Law research sessions for CUL community. The law library is going to run three basic legal research sessions for colleagues in CUL as part of the info lit initiative.
- Mary and Jaron talked to instruction coordinators about information literacy pilots. Law is ahead of other units because they are already involved in first year instruction. Amy working with Valerie Hans. Could instruct all of libraries by dividing groups into 6 and do 1-hour sessions in Olin. Planning 3 sessions at Law, look at dates and start promoting.
- Way to get basics to everyone, ensures referrals, good way to communicate with other libraries
4. Planning for an end of year summit, including speaker and another charrette round.
- Based on feedback from December's charette
- Another session would get a new group of people
- Could we have a speaker? Not necessarily a forerunner in the field, could be someone from NY state (mid-level) who could bring value
- Nicole at NYU (Kaila's former colleague), interested in promoting reflection in the classroom, could be interesting to have her here for the charette, as she was involved, we could learn what people are doing at NYU
- Larger theme?
- Opportunity to discuss PSEC Instruction including IL
- Depending on other readings, we could invite authors for continuity
- Gaby can share notes typed up from charette
- Could have someone from CTE during the day (could be almost a full day)
- R&O Unconference is May 21, could do the summit in the fall semester (May 4 is the last day of classes), could do a morning (or morning, with something optional in the beginning of the afternoon), could have Barbara Freedman and/or someone from CTE
- Best week would be before Unconference
- We have the funding this year
- Half-day with Nicole/charette and optional afternoon session (1 or 1.5 hour(s)) which is open to everyone and about the discussion of future direction of PSEC Instruction
- If not Nicole, someone from CTE with the idea of feeding out of a past article discussion
December 2012
Agenda
Attending: Kaila Bussert (co-chair), Gaby Castro Gessner (RAU liaison and notetaker), Tony Cosgrave, Amy Emerson, Chris Miller, Thomas Mills (co-chair), Mary Ochs, Nina Scholtz, Patrick Stevens, Marsha Taichman.
Location: Law Library, December 5, 11:00 am
Announcements & Updates
- CTE Faculty Luncheon - Thomas and Jaron joined the CTE faculty luncheon and shared IL info on campus. Librarians who attended the discussion post-luncheon and where matched with faculty based on subject were: kaila, camille, virginia, chris, jill wilson, lynn thitchener. For next time, the suggestion is to include all librarians in the luncheon to emphasize a partnership and provide greater opportunities for discussion and networking. Additional lead time for these events would be welcome. We might be able to get feedback on the usefulness of this event from CTE (via Thomas and Jaron).
- Follow-up to this event is another luncheon in May.
- Marsha brought up the question about college/university-wide learning outcomes - if there is a central place for them. Aside from the university-wide website on assessment and learning outcomes (group chaired by Kathy Edmonson), there is no central place to find LO by college.
Final planning for End of Semester Instruction Forum on Dec. 14
- facilitators - Mary (time keeper), Gaby (process), Thomas (group recap and discussion); Kaila (intro)
- how to form groups -- count attendees by 7s to form 6 or 7 groups (RSVPs 12; total attendees 15, I think).
- dry-run meeting on Dec. 11, 11am in Mann 160 - Thomas, Mary, Kaila, Gaby, Nina. (flip charts, markers, pens, clickers for mini-assessment)
- refreshments - provided by Mary (Shirley helped set up)

- R&O Forum on Dec. 11 - Mary presented ILTF work to-date and we also got a bit of feedback on what folks have worked on since Immersion. (Jaron, Chris, Mary & Gaby worked on struture of pres)
New model and charge for PSEC Instruction 2013 - 2014
- continuity in chairships - perhaps a steering committee of 3 (chair elect, chair and past chair) to meet more frequently and without the whole group
- representation from all unit libraries, plus RMC (6- 7 people)
- 2 year terms, some could be one year appointments to allow rotation off or people to be part of steering committee
- Mary is the CUL lead for Instruction - and this role continues unless we hear differently from Janet
- Recommendation for restructuring of PSEC Instruction has to be run by LD executive team and PSEC executive before integrating into final report.
- Mary will incorporate notes from today's feedback to the recommendation
- Tony will look for the Instruction committee's charge and send it to Kaila/Thomas and the rest of the group.

- IMLS grant on library services and their impact on student success.
Lisa Hinchliffe, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; Megan Oakleaf, Syracuse University; and Kara Malenfant, Association of College and Research Libraries have received an IMLS grant to conduct a study of the impact of library services on student learning and student success. They will be looking for 75 institutions and will have a call for applications in January.
This is a bit more information on the study :
Three hundred colleges and universities of all types will be selected to participate in the AiA learning community (Year 1: 75 institutions; Year 2: 100 institutions; Year 3: 125 institutions). Each participating institution will identify a team consisting of a librarian and at least two additional team members as determined by the campus (e.g., faculty member, student affairs representative, institutional researchers, or academic administrator). The librarians will participate in a one-year professional development program that includes team-based activities carried out on their campuses. The institutional teams will participate in peer review and provide feedback about projects being developed by other participating teams. The projects will be documented and disseminated for use by the wider academic library and higher education communities. For more details about AiA see the project homepage.
The institutional teams for AiA will be selected through a competitive application process designed to ensure representation from an array of postsecondary institutions. Information about how to apply to participate in the first cohort will be available in January 2013.
For more information about these positions, see the full call for the peer-to-peer instructional design expert advisor and the curriculum designers/facilitators. If you have questions about these positions, the Assessment in Action project, or ACRL’s Value of Academic Libraries initiative, please contact Kara Malenfant, ACRL Senior Strategist for Special Initiatives, at kmalenfant@ala.org or (312) 280-2510.

Minutes
October 10, 2012
Attending: Thomas Mills, Kaila Bussert, Gaby Castro Gessner, Marsha Taichman, Chris Miller, Nina Scholtz, Patrick Stevens, Tony Cosgrave, Jaron Porciello, Amy Emerson (minutes)
Thomas opened the meeting with a call for announcements and updates.
Fall Speakers
Thomas and Kaila identified two potential speakers for the fall, including Megan Oakleaf of Syracuse University and Randy Hensley of CUNY. Unfortunately, correspondence with Megan Oakleaf has revealed that her costs ($3,500 + travel) are beyond PSEC’s budget, so she is no longer a viable option. Thomas and Kaila will next touch base with Randy Hensley.
Thomas and Kaila encouraged members to pursue other ideas for speakers. They are looking for someone who can provide a wide forum/discussion/presentation/answer questions/follow up on Immersion/keep-the-ball-rolling-kind-of-program with a focus on presentation styles, assessment, etc. Perhaps someone from Cornell’s Center for Teaching Excellence might be a possibility. Also, Deb Gilchrist may be able to suggest someone else who could speak about assessment.
Although PSEC approved funding for two speakers, it was agreed that for now we will focus on one speaker for the fall semester instead of two. A second speaker will be reserved for the spring semester.
Information Literacy Awareness Month
LCD Slides were created by Gwen Glazer for the purpose of advertising Information Literacy Awareness Month around campus. Slides are currently up and running in several libraries, as well as the Cornell Store.
Last year, Anne Kenney sent a “Take One” to CUL in honor of Information Literacy Awareness Month. The group considered whether to ask Anne to do so again, and if so, what the angle would be. Tony suggested approaching it from the state perspective as well as the federal. He will look into whether New York State has declared a Proclamation regarding Information Literacy. (Update: Tony confirmed that October is Information Literacy month in New York.)
MOOC Courses
Cornell will be piloting two MOOC courses. MOOC stands for Massive, Open Online Courses. Anne has invited Jesse and Kaila to be on the implementation team. They will work with IT at Cornell. Neither faculty nor content have been identified yet, so is very much in the beginning stages. The library is involved in instructional design, etc. It is unknown whether the courses will be geared toward humanities, sciences, etc. There may be an information literacy component for us to consider.
PSEC update
Amy reported that PSEC will be serving as the new face of CountIt! Zsuzsa will soon be making an announcement to all of CUL about this.
The Web Advisory Committee is being absorbed into the Discovery and Access Team. Gaby raised concerns about the temporary nature of the Discovery and Access Team. (Update: Amy shared this concern with PSEC and it was decided that this absorption would still occur, because ultimately there will be an ongoing need for a team of Discovery and Access’ nature, and so it will either become permanent or it will be replaced with something very similar.)
Instruction Discussion
It was decided that the first Instruction Discussion will occur on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 9:30-10:30am. Marsha will lead the discussion. It will be focused on problem-based learning. Marsha will book a room in Fine Arts – Conference Room – third floor, Rand Hall. Nina will send out the announcement and the reading.
Information Literacy Task Force Update
The task force is comprised of Chris Miller, Jaron Porciello, Thomas Mills, Kaila Bussert, Gaby Castro Gessner, Lance Heidig, Mary Ochs, and Camille Andrews. Their charge is to work on strategic Goal 4 of the larger strategic plan, including designing an information literacy program and integrating it into the curriculum.
Jaron reported on the Learning @ CUL document: The Task Force is trying to wrap up their work this semester because the task force is coming to a close. There will be a formal report. It needs to be determined with Janet McCue what will happen after the task force ends - how the work will continue and how coordination will play out. It is likely that it will encompass something like what we’re doing now – discussions, brown bags, etc. Other ideas also included better sharing of materials, forums where each unit can present what it is they do for instruction and what instruction means to them, better collaboration with faculty to get faculty on board and get librarians invited into classes. All agreed that getting higher administration involved is crucial to achieving these goals.
Regarding revising the Learning @ CUL document: The Task Force is talking to every instruction coordinator at every unit library to see what unit programs look like and to get feedback. This will assist in creating criteria for a pilot program. The pilot is designed to represent a more formalized information literacy program. It’s very complex and will look different for every library. Therefore, the Task Force is trying to determine a set of criteria to get a framework for the pilot, rather than actually define it at this time.
The Instruction Team at Olin provides a good example of ongoing efforts in this regard (Kaila, Lance & Suzette). They have written a set of learning objectives for first year writing seminars based on what was learned at Immersion. Their goal is to have something to show to the faculty they work with. Ultimately they hope to have these learning outcomes embedded in the syllabi, and to eventually be tailored to the course.
MediaSpace
Kaila reported on MediaSpace: Media Space is a new platform that brings together all of the library’s media (library created videos only). It includes audio files but is targeted to multi-media. It also includes instruction content and collection content. MediaSpace is meant for the public but will also be highly used as an internal tool. Tags may be added and metadata associated with them. It has not yet been determined where it will link from the library website. The videos may be embedded in the website & LibGuides, etc. Uploading of content will be locked to library staff.
Discussion ensued surrounding the subcategories to be included in the Tutorials Tab. Possibilities: orientation, tutorials, starting research, find, evaluate, use, cite, and how-to’s. The group generally agreed that tutorials was the best term and was in keeping with the other tabs. How-to’s, citing, etc. may be subcategories.
Kaila will make a mock-up of a list of categories based on the group’s suggestions and present it to the group for input.

We shared Immersion take a ways. These included learning outcomes, working with colleagues from different units, positive feedback from Immersion faculty about instruction at CUL, anxiety is a shared emotion, learning to think about why we do certain activities in the classroom, developed deeper interest in instruction and learning.
We need to maintain Immersion Momentum:
Encourage Immersion small group activities: Jaron suggested that we host an hour-long lightning round session where teaching librarians share techniques. It was suggested that we do that at an upcoming Reference and Outreach meeting. Marsha, who serves on the R&O committee, agreed to check with R&O chairs about December's forum.
Speaker series: a budget request has been submitted to PSEC for two speakers. Names suggested were Randy Hensley and Megan Oakleaf. This is on the agenda for the next PSEC. Amy will notify the committee on the outcome of the request.
Two instruction discussions related to a reading. Jaron made a suggestion for a potential reading.
Information Literacy Month – Amy agreed to working with Library Communication on some digital signage and Facebook to raise awareness that October Information Literacy Month. Thomas will talk to them about an article in the Cornell Daily Sun that will also mention the Immersion Program.
- Committee roles and responsibilities:
Mary and Jaron are co-chairing the IL Task Force. Jaron, Mary, Thomas, and Kaila are leading the committees as a Steering Group. Amy is the committee’s liaison with PSEC.
- Instruction Discussions Coordinator:
Nina volunteered to coordinate our instruction discussions. With input from the committee, she will select the readings, reserve a location and advertise the events.
- Wiki administrator:
No one volunteered for this position. We agreed that the minute taker will post the committee’s minutes on the wiki.
- CUL MediaSpace categories for instructional videos:
Kaila provided a screen shot of the home page for this beta service. It will be a location where the Library can aggregate any videos staff and units have created. There are some decisions to be made regarding naming conventions. Kaila will send out an email to the committee soliciting feedback on these.
- Learning@CUL feedback:
We need to give our feedback on this document. We will be meeting with the Information Literacy Task Force at our October meeting to discuss plans for prioritizing goals and moving forward.
