Mr. Canaan is the Managing Partner of Marinus Capital Advisors. Prior to founding Marinus in 2010, Mr. Canaan was a Managing Director at GSO Capital, a Blackstone Group affiliate. Previously, Mr. Canaan was the Executive Managing Director and Co-Head of International Fixed Income at Nomura Securities International in New York (2003-2006) with responsibilities over all activities in the U.S., Europe, and Non-Japan Asia. In his various roles at Nomura, Mr. Canaan managed a trading and origination business of one thousand professionals and a balance sheet in excess of $100 Billion. Prior to Nomura, Mr. Canaan was a Managing Director and Principal with Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette (DLJ then CSFB) (1988-2001). Holding several positions in research and trading, he was instrumental in establishing the Special Situations desk within the MBS Group at DLJ. He is a member of the Cornell University Council, a President’s Circle volunteer for the Annual Fund, a Director of the Epsilon Association at Cornell University, a member of the Advisory Council of the Buck Institute, a board member of Toktumi Inc, and a Senior Member of LIFECEO of Kingswood US Holdings, Inc, an integrated international
wealth management group. Prior to Kingswood, he was the managing partner
and founder of Marinus Capital Advisor, an alternative investment management
firm. Canaan was also a managing director and head of structured finance at GSO
Capital, the credit arm of the Blackstone Group. Previously, he established and
managed the Structured Products Trading Group at Brevan Howard, was executive
managing director and co-head of International Markets at Nomura Securities
International, and co-head of fixed income for Nomura International PLC. He was
a member of the Global Fixed Income Management Committee and served on the
Operating Board of the US Broker/Dealer entity. Prior to Nomura, Canaan was a
managing director and principal with Donaldson, Lufkin, and Jenrette, where he
established the Special Situations Group, a unit focused on the acquisition, workout,
and disposition of distressed residential real estate assets. Canaan has served
as an executive board member of The Bond Market Association. He is a trustee
of the Epsilon Association, Inc (Cornell University), serves on the Administrative
Board of the Cornell University Council, and is also a co-chair of Cornell’s Annual
Fund Leadership Committee. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering (1986) electrical engineering and a Master
of Engineering Degree in Nuclear Engineering (1987).
