II. Partially Analyzed Serials:

Serials often have some individual issues (or groups of issues) with their own distinct title.  Those issues sometimes have their own monographic records, with the serial title as the series (MARC field 490/830 ), and the distinct title as the main title of the monograph (MARC 245 field).  This means that the serial has been 'partially analyzed' (i.e. some, but not all, issues have a corresponding mono record), and the monographic records representing certain issues are called 'analytics'.  In the past, selectors would request that CUL catalog both the main run of serials (on a serial record), AND add monographic records for individual issues (or groups of issues) that had their own title.  This way, patrons would be able to search successfully by the monographic title, in case they weren't aware that it was part of a serial.

LTS no longer creates new records for partially analyzed serials at selector request, but staff should be familiar with the ways they were processed in the pastAnother type of resource that uses Holdings notes with "Bound-with Item Data" is a partially analyzed serial.  LTS no longer creates records for partially analyzed serials, but LTS staff should be familiar with they've been processed, as maintenance issues may arise.  Partially analyzed serials may not strictly be bound-with physically (in that multiple physical parts are bound together), but the records share many properties with physically- bound-with material, and are worth illustrating here:

Example 1.:

The serial "North American Fauna" (Instance When a serial has issues with their own distinctive title, libraries 117352) has a Mann, Annex Holdings with a note that says "partially analyzed serial" (note type: note and staff only).  This is the sign that some issues of this serial have also been cataloged as monographs, so their individual titles will be searchable.
