So as we all learned today, "mitochondrial heterogeneity" usually means different numbers/densities of mitochondria being present in different cells or volumes of tissue from different regions of (in our case) the brain... but it also can mean actual differences in the properties of individual mitochondria, or classes of mitochondria.  Or so it seems.  Should you wish to dig into this, here are a couple of reviews that may be of interest:
