Craig A. Wheeler joined Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as Chief Executive Officer
as CEO in September of 2006. He also serves as a member of the company’s board of directors.
Momenta Pharmaceuticals is a biotechnology company specializing in the detailed
characterization and engineering of complex drugs. Under Wheeler’s leadership,
Momenta and its collaboration partner Sandoz received FDA approval for the first
ever generic Lovenox, and more recently generic Copaxone. Prior to Momenta,
Wheeler worked at Chiron Corporation as President, Chiron BioPharmaceuticals,
which had products treating cancer, cystic fibrosis, and multiple sclerosis. Wheeler
was also led the company
through the launch of its first complex drug products, including the first generic versions
of LOVENOX® and once-daily COPAXONE®. He has overseen the company’s
growth into the diversified business it is today. In 2011, he was an E&Y Entrepreneur
of the Year Regional Award winner. In May 2012, the Boston Globe named Momenta
the number one company in their annual Globe 100 survey of top performing companies.
Prior to joining Momenta, Wheeler was President of Chiron BioPharmaceuticals
and a senior member of The Boston Consulting Group’s health care practice,
worked for . He
began his career at Merck’s MSDRL research unit as a senior engineer, and at Hybritech as a
financial analyst. He is Chairman of . Wheeler is currently a member of
the Board of Directors of GPhA and in 2011 was
an E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year Regional Award winner. Previously, he was Chairman
Amicus Therapeutics as well as the Generic Pharmaceutical
Association where he previously served as Chairman from 2014 to February
2016. He also previously served as the Chairman of the Board of Avanir Pharmaceuticals. He holds a B.S. and an M.S. degree
in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and an M.B.A. from the Wharton
School of the University of Pennsylvania
where he helped oversee the transition of the company from a research-based
platform to a fully integrated CNS pharmaceutical company until 2015 when it was
acquired by Otsuka Pharmaceuticals for $3.5 billion.
