All softcover monographs will be sorted by the preservation staff prior to stiffening to determine if stiffening is necessary. The decision whether or not to stiffen will be determined by the quality of the cover, paper and glue. If a volume will hold up to circulation, it will not be stiffened and returned to physical processing.

Criteria for Stiffening (approved by LibExec as cost-cutting measure in spring 2013)

  • Paperbound items for a reference location, reserves, and the New and Noteworthy shelves
  • Paperbound items with accompanying material
  • Paperbound items that are less than ¼” thick and greater than 14” tall (unless pam binding seems a better option)

Criteria for Pamphlet Binding (approved by LibExec as cost-cutting measure in spring 2015)

  • Items for reserves
  • Items needing pockets
  • Items without covers or a spine (that is, pages stapled together through the fold)
  • Items less than ¼” thick and under 8” tall
  • Items with very flimsy paper covers (that is, not cover stock)
