  • Ability to work well with others is essential.
  • Acquire skills via on-the-job training so you can:
    • Install operating systems and applications on Windows and Macs and do updates. Includes network and printer settings.
    • Help department staff and faculty at their computers for things you are trained to do.
    • Maintain and update group's documentation for ourselves and users for things you are knowledgeable about.
    • Perform web page edits.
  • Maintain organization of computer-related equipment.
    • Includes moving computer equipment in and out of our office, and making sure things go to the right places and locations are properly labeled.
      • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
    • Includes performing hardware inventory throughout the department
  • Contribute to optimizing administration of Chemistry's Linux systems, including research servers and workstations.
    • Educate and advise group's IT staff on Linux-based tools and processes.
    • Discover, research, and develop alternative Linux-based solutions
      • Work with group's technical staff to test and implement new solutions in a sustainable fashion.
      • Automate where appropriate (scripts, etc.)
      • Optimize maintenance and configuration activities (consider implementing Puppet or the like.)
    • Participate in documenting architecture, processes, and decisions in meaningful ways.
  • Facilitate researchers' access to in-house, Linux-based services.

  • An interest in running high performance computing clusters.
  • Regularly use either Windows or Mac computers.
  • Preferable skills:
    • Excellent writing skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to learn computer software maintenance and configuration skills
  • Federal Work Study (FWS) students are strongly encouraged to applyPreferable skills or experiences:
  • Administrating production Linux servers and/ or a large number of Linux systems.
  • Experience integrating Macs, Windows and/or Active Directory within a Linux environment.
  • Use of cloud-based, high-performance, computing resources.
