February 2013
Attending: Nina, Patrick, Tony, Gaby, Thomas, Kaila and Marsha
February 6 in Olin 106G from 11-12
Agenda
1. Article discussions - dates for spring semester, etc.
- Chris agreed to facilitate an article discussion (maybe on humor in the classroom), Tony will do one as well (on the flip classroom)
- Want to encourage people to come, even if they haven't read the article
- Facilitators could do summaries
- Other topics: peer instruction, Jose Antonio Bowin (sp?) TEACHING NAKED (communicating interactively and with technology)Bowen's TEACHING NAKED: HOW MOVING TECHNOLOGY OUT OF YOUR CLASSROOM WILL IMPROVE STUDENT LEARNING, mental modes of librarians versus students discussing Libguides
- Last semester: these were on the last Tuesdays of the month to avoid R&O, will keep them in the same slot this semester
- Perhaps we should have a virtual space to file articles for PSEC Instruction? Kaila will look into permissions.
2. Discussion of PSEC-Instruction committee structure moving forward
3. Law research sessions for CUL community. The law library is going to run three basic legal research sessions for colleagues in CUL as part of the info lit initiative.
4. Planning for an end of year summit, including speaker and another charrette round.
- Task force is done, report submitted
- No home for the work that the task force undertook, and the logical place to take this up would be the Instruction committee (please see IL TASK FORCE REPORT from January 15, 2013 document for details of proposed restructuring and membership)
- We want to ensure continuity of the group
- Chair elect to be chosen in addition to current membership
- 14 members under new model
- Chair and chair elect could be enough to maintain continuity
- Current membership is 2 years (this would mean a longer membership with new chair structure)
- Instruction coordinators from each library will always need to be involved
- Report went to Janet and LEG, if this is accepted then an AUL (Janet?) will be making contact with Instruction coordinators rather than current chairs
- When we get the go ahead, we will reexamine our charges
3. Law research sessions for CUL community. The law library is going to run three basic legal research sessions for colleagues in CUL as part of the info lit initiative.
- Mary and Jaron talked to instruction coordinators about information literacy pilots. Law is ahead of other units because they are already involved in first year instruction. Could instruct all of libraries by dividing groups into 6 and do 1-hour sessions in Olin. Planning 3 sessions at Law, look at dates and start promoting.
- Way to get basics to everyone, ensures referrals, good way to communicate with other libraries
4. Planning for an end of year summit, including speaker and another charrette round.
- Based on feedback from December's charette
- Another session would get a new group of people
- Could we have a speaker? Not necessarily a forerunner in the field, could be someone from NY state (mid-level) who could bring value
- Nicole at NYU (Kaila's friend), interested in promoting reflection in the classroom, could be interesting to have her here for the charette, as she was involved, we could learn what people are doing at NYU
- Larger theme?
- Opportunity to discuss PSEC Instruction including IL
- Depending on other readings, we could invite authors for continuity
- Gaby can share notes typed up from charette
- Could have someone from CTE during the day (could be almost a full day)
- R&O Unconference is May 21, could do the summit in the fall semester (May 4 is the last day of classes), could do a morning (or morning, with something optional in the beginning of the afternoon), could have Barbara Freedman and/or someone from CTE
- Best week would be before Unconference
- We have the funding this year
- Half-day with Nicole/charette and optional afternoon session (1 or 1.5 hour(s)) which is open to everyone and about the discussion of future direction of PSEC Instruction
- If not Nicole, someone from CTE with the idea of feeding out of a past article discussion
